Designing The Mask For The Man in LUCKY

October 6, 2022

A bit about designing the mask for “The Man” in LUCKY. Natasha was very inspired by this painting because it looked like someone wearing Saran Wrap. And we wanted something clear that from a distance you’d see and wonder if it was a mask or not. In terms of costume, I kept coming back to the words “posh” and “beautiful.” I found this pic of Mads Mikklesen as Hannibal Lecter as reference.

On our first meeting with FX guru Jeff Farley, he came prepared with this preliminary sculpt which was PERFECT. The last touch, which I believe was also Jeff’s idea, was putting May’s name across The Man’s lips.

Later in the finale, when there are multiple masked men, they each have the name of the woman they’ve imprinted themselves onto on their masks. A very cool subtle detail you wouldn’t notice unless directed to it. The best part of collaboration is when ideas like this happen! I still have one of the masks at home.

Official Trailer! Life takes a sudden turn for May (Brea Grant, After Midnight), a popular self-help book author, when she finds herself the target of a mysterious man with murderous intentions. Every night, without fail he comes after her, and every day the people around her barely seem to notice. With no one to turn to, May is pushed to her limits and must take matters into her own hands to survive and to regain control of her life. Written by Brea Grant, directed by Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl), produced by Robert V. Galluzzo.
