Ashmore Divulges Plot Details For Mother’s Day
February 4, 2010
While chatting with actor Shawn Ashmore about his latest film Frozen, Shock was able to shift the conversation towards Mother’s Day, his next genre film from Saw sequel director Darren Lynn Bousman.
“Mother’s Day is going to be a really dark, psychological thriller. It’s definitely bloody and it’s definitely gory, but I wouldn’t call it just a ‘horror’ movie,” he explains.
“I play a character named George Barnum. In our movie, the Koffin brothers have robbed a bank and in the midst of robbing the bank, one of the brothers gets shot, so they go home to their mother’s house to lay low and figure out what to do. And they come bursting into their old childhood home and realize that everything’s different. They realize that their mother had lost the house without telling them, and they stumble upon a birthday party with these 10 yuppie types partying in the basement. So they hold them all hostage and my character George is a doctor, so he’s given the task of keeping the brother alive or they’re going to kill everyone in the house. It’s a really intense movie.”
“I’ve only actually seen bits and pieces of the original Mother’s Day,” confesses Ashmore, “but mainly because from what I was told, it’s different and they wanted me to do my own thing. There’s definitely some references, but it’s based on the idea of the original with this psychopath family of crazy brothers with their mother leading the charge.”
The actor also seemed excited by the impressive group of actors he got to work with on the update which included Rebecca De Mornay, Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Jaime King (VH1’s upcoming Scream Queens), Patrick Flueger, Warren Kole, Matt O’Leary and Briana Evigan (Sorority Row).
“It was also strange too because it was almost the complete opposite filming experience compared to Frozen. For Mother’s Day, we were on a built set, as opposed to having three actors on a chair lift. For this, we had 20 actors, this huge ensemble cast and you’re trying to weave your character into this story. Darren was great to work with and I’m really excited to see how it turns out.”
Mother’s Day is due in theaters later this year. Click here to read our exclusive chat with director Darren Lynn Bousman.
