Of all the horror classics out there, PHANTASM is the last hold out in terms of getting a proper high def release on Blu-Ray.

Well with the following news, and a new movie PHANTASM V: RAVAGER on the horizon, here’s hoping we’re one step closer to that Blu-Ray release of either the original or a box set containing all the movies!

Our friend Quint over at Ain’t It Cool News reported from BNAT that JJ Abrams and his team over at Bad Robot have been secretly helping filmmaker Don Coscarelli with a 4K restoration of his horror debut, scanned from the original negative. And as you can see, so far the results have been spectacular!

If you’re wondering where JJ fits in on all this, well he’s got a little movie coming out this week called STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and the lead villain is named Captain Phasma, a nod to Coscarelli’s most well known horror feature.

The latest movie in the franchise PHANTASM V: RAVAGER, which Coscarelli is overseeing and producing with David Hartman directing, reunites the entire, original core cast and has been in post-production for quite a while now, mainly because it’s very much a family affair and they’ve been working on it completely independently. Here’s hoping with the word out, now, about this restoration and the new movie in the can, we’ll get some news shortly about a proper release for both. Here’s one more screengrab.
