With so many streaming services at our finger tips now, what’s cool about Shudder is it is fully curated by fellow die-hard genre fans like you, and who better to clue you into the title or two that may have slipped through the cracks over the years?

Here’re 5 recommendations that are total horror gems, worthy of your attention!

CREEP

Not to be confused with the Mark Duplass one from Blumhouse Productions, a decade before that CREEP came the vastly underrated directorial debut from filmmaker Christopher Smith. He’s one of those horror directors that doesn’t get name-checked enough. He also gave us SEVERANCE, TRIANGLE and BLACK DEATH. Before all those, he brought RUN LOLA RUN’s Franka Potente to the London subway tunnels to fend off against a creepy underground dweller! Part DEATH LINE (aka RAW MEAT), part THE DESCENT, the “creep” in the movie absolutely earns that moniker!

CUB

This 2014 flick from Belgium didn’t get nearly the wide U.S. release it deserved, but director Jonas Govaerts’ CUB is definitely worth a look. A group of young kids go out on a summer scout camping trip, but for the troubled 12 year old Sam, it hasn’t been particularly easy to relate to his peers, mainly because they sadistically pick on him at the encouragement of their leader. But that’s the least of their worries when Sam becomes convinced there may be a monster in the woods. This one gets pretty mean spirited and nasty, but if that’s how you like your horror, give it a shot.

GRABBERS

From director Jon Wright and screenwriter Kevin LeHane comes this sharp, funny creature feature about a town off the coast of Ireland that gets invaded by giant sea monsters! The only way to survive? They apparently won’t attack anyone with a high concentration of alcohol in their system. So, a small group must continue to stay drunk while they figure out a way to defeat their monstrous adversaries!

GRACE

Just how strong is a mother’s bond with their child? In Paul Solet’s directorial debut, GRACE, we find out that even after death, that bond is unbreakable. When Madeline’s baby dies in utero after a car accident, she decides to carry her deceased child to term. But when born, everyone is shocked to find that Grace is alive! But… she’s developed a thirst for blood. What lengths will Madeline go to to keep her baby girl alive?

THE CONVENT

Want something that’s just a blast of fun from start to finish? Mike Mendez’s possessed nun flick THE CONVENT should do the trick! When a group of college kids break into an abandoned convent to party, little do they release that the unquiet spirits of some nasty possessed nuns still dwell within its halls. And what’d ya know? There are Satanists that plan to perform a sacrifice there the same night too! Bill Moseley, Coolio and the great Adrienne Barbeau all pop up in this hilarious horror comedy!
