Killer POV Pick Of The Week: COOTIES

October 2, 2015

On this week’s Killer POV, we opened up the conversation by discussing some of the “cannibal” sub-genre, since I’d just seen Eli Roth’s THE GREEN INFERNO, which then prompted me to revisit CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and CANNIBAL FEROX. But for this week’s pick of the week, I wanted to pick what I consider to be one of the most fun flicks I’d had the pleasure of checking out this year. That would be COOTIES.

I heard quite a bit about COOTIES after it’s festival debut earlier this year, but the movie just hit VOD and I got together with a handful of friends to watch it. From filmmaking duo Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, COOTIES stars an all star hilarious cast consisting of Elijah Wood (MANIAC), Rainn Wilson (HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES), Alison Pill (SNOWPIERCER), Jack McBrayer (30 ROCK) and Leigh Whannell (SAW), who also scripted this horror/comedy. Without giving too much away, it’s pretty straight forward. It’s a movie about a bunch of zombie kids. Set in an elementary school on Clint’s (Elijah Wood’s) first day, one little girl takes a bite out of a chicken nugget that… has the cooties. Before you know it, an epidemic has spread and the remaining teachers are barricaded in the school with a bunch of blood thirsty, frenzied little buggers.

Quite frankly, and I know this sounds wrong – I found the movie hilarious because anytime violence is inflicted against children in this comical a way, especially zombie children, I can’t help but laugh out loud. Rainn Wilson steals the show and Leigh Whannell’s quirky, socially awkward Doug is another stand out. The pace slows down towards the third act, but I still found the whole thing thoroughly enjoyable making it my Killer POV pick of the week.
